Description
The Niccolò Tommaseo Naval College is a Rationalist building in Brindisi, built between 1934 and 1937 to a design by the architect Gaetano Minnucci. It appeals to lovers of 1930s architecture, and is to be seen from the outside.
It was where the boys of the GIL naval college studied (the GIL being the Fascist youth organization, the Gioventù italiana del littorio): classical or scientific high school courses, with training similar to that of a naval academy.
During the war the building housed two academies at once: on November 7, 1943 the Air Force Academy resumed operating here, alongside the Naval Academy, which had already reestablished itself here.
After the war it was a school and boarding college until the late 1970s; then it was left abandoned and occupied by evicted families. The restoration project earmarks it for tourism and for the university, which is looking for a single home in the city for its faculties.
