Description

The Fontana dei Delfini is the 19th-century marble fountain in the gardens of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, on Brindisi's waterfront facing the harbor. It makes a pleasant little stop during a stroll by the sea.

In the middle of a round, rosette-shaped pool rises a marble basin on a square base. Inside it, three dolphins form a pyramid with their tails in the air: water pours from their mouths into the basin, and from four spouts it spills into the pool below.

The city council commissioned the fountain in 1876, to a design by the engineer Rubini and with materials brought from Naples. Probably built in 1879 in Piazzetta Palumbo, between Via Cesare Battisti and Corso Umberto I, it moved twice: to Piazza Beccaria and finally here.

Through a misunderstanding, some have mistaken it for the old fountain of San Crisostomo, linked to the aqueduct of Pietro Luigi De Torres: but that one stood elsewhere, and all trace of it was lost in 1897.
