Description
The Fontana dell'Impero is a monumental fountain from 1940 at the foot of Piazza Santa Teresa, on the Brindisi waterfront: a marble front with stern lines, between the two flights of steps that climb to the square, with the regime's dedication plain to read.
It was designed by the architect Iginio Grassi in Alpine green marble and black marble from the province of Brindisi. At the top are three emblems: in the center the eagle, on the left the city's coat of arms, on the right the province's.
Across the facade runs the Latin inscription in large letters: the year 1940, the eighteenth of the Fascist era, the king and emperor Victor Emmanuel and the Duce Benito Mussolini. It was built by the Province, as the last line says.
The fountain stands right against the ancient Messapian walls: in a few meters you go from the pre-Roman city to the rhetoric of the Fascist years.
