Description
The Fontana delle Ancore is the monumental fountain of Piazza Cairoli, in Brindisi: it's made of Trani stone, it's the work of the artist Gaetano Lepore and it dates from 1937, the last of three fountains that followed one another in the square.
The square gained importance after the first Teatro Verdi was built, in 1901, but the first fountain only arrived in 1921: a large, simple basin, with a single jet in the center.
Ten years later the basin was embellished with two toads and two turtles on the rim and a small column of four fasces holding up a bowl. Many jets, from the center to the rim and back, created plays of light.
It didn't last long: in 1937 the fountain was rebuilt from scratch by the Acquedotto Pugliese, and took on the look it still has.
