Description

The Fountain of the Anchors, which dates back to 1937, is located in Piazza Cairoli. The area assumed some importance after the construction of the first Teatro Verdi (1901), but the first pool-fountain - big but very simple, with a central fountain - was completed only in 1921. Ten years later, the pool was enriched by four bases on the outer edge, on which rested two large frogs, two turtles, and the central column consisted of four fasces carrying an elegant cup; the many water fountains, from the center to the edge and back created beautiful lighting effects. Six years later, the fountain was completely restyled on a new project by the Autonomous Aqueduct Pugliese, taking its present aspect.
