Description
The Monument to Aldo Moro and the Fallen of Via Fani is a large steel sculpture, about 12 meters tall, in Brindisi: Marcello Avenali dedicated it to the statesman and the five men of his escort, killed by the Red Brigades in Rome on March 16, 1978.
The work is made of two parts that wrap around each other in a sinuous movement, forming the torn tree of life. A red line runs inside it, the blood of the victims; at the top, the stylized birds are the ideals, flying beyond violence and death.
Avenali chose Brindisi in 1979, convinced that the tragedy of the Years of Lead had to be lived through and remembered by the whole community. The structure was calculated by the engineer Sergio Musmeci and tested in FIAT's wind tunnel, to make sure it would stand up to the gusts.
The monument was inaugurated on June 1, 1980 by the Minister of Justice Tommaso Morlino, in the presence of Aldo Moro's sister.
