Description
Brindisi's War Memorial honors those who died in World War I, in Piazza Santa Teresa above the waterfront: it's a group in white Carrara marble by the Brindisi-born sculptor Edgardo Simone, commissioned by the city.
Finding it a home was quite an undertaking. The city had the station forecourt in mind, but Simone objected: there the work would not get the prominence it deserved.
So Piazza Engelberto Dionisi, on the waterfront, was chosen, and King Victor Emmanuel III unveiled it there on November 22, 1931. The sculptor wasn't happy with that spot either: in 1938 the monument was taken down and moved, temporarily, to Piazza della Vittoria.
Only in 1940 did it find its permanent home in Piazza Santa Teresa. Simone made war memorials in some thirty cities, it seems, some of them outside Italy, and ended his career in Hollywood, as a set designer for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
